SIPs’ superior performance in energy-efficient construction is summed up by Sam Rashkin, National Director of Energy Star for Homes: “A SIP house has fewer joints, less complicated interfaces between conditioned and unconditioned spaces, and it is dramatically easier to make it tight.

USDOE research underscores this, demonstrating that SIPs are approximately 15 times more airtight that stick framing. In blower door tests, a SIP room’s air leakage rate was 8 cf/minute at 50 pascals (CFM50) compared to 121 CFM50 for stick construction.

Other DOE tests showed that SIPs have about a 47% higher whole-wall R-value than stick framed walls of similar thickness. A 3-½” foam core SIP wall had an R-value of 14.1, while a 2x4 wall with 16” on-center studs and fiberglass insulation had an R-value of 9.6. The 3-½” foam core SIP wall even outperformed the 13.7 R-value of an advanced-framed wall constructed with 2x6 studs at 24” on-center.

Given SIPs’ air tightness, superior insulation and reduced thermal bridging, they work well in Passive House designs and net-zero energy homes. Their other green factors include helping reduce job site construction scrap up to two-thirds and supporting healthier indoor air by sealing out irritants and pollutants
